Having looked into what the darknet is and how it operates as a system it is important to look deeper into how it operates and some of the criminal activity that takes place, including ‘hurtcore’.
Daly (2018) describes hurtcore as ‘an extreme form of porn focusing on the non-simulated, hardcore affliction of pain, torture and humiliation, mainly on children, including toddlers’ (online). It is shared online on specific websites on the darknet and over the much-debated Red Rooms.
Red rooms are online live webcams people can join and often feature people tied up whilst someone beats, rapes or otherwise tortures them, certain actions being dictated by viewers using the chat and by paying with bitcoin, Waugh (2017) explains. However, despite stories being featured on Reddit and other such sites there is no evidence to suggest that they actually exist (Ormsby, 2014). Ormsby admits some truth to the ideas though, as hurtcore pornography sites are real.
Often considered something of an urban legend, much like Red rooms, three videos named ‘Daisy’s Destruction’ are an infamous example of hurtcore pornography featuring the torture and rape of three girls by a masked woman (Ormsby, 2016). The videos were uploaded on Hurt2thecore and users paid up to $10,000 to stream these videos (Waugh, 2016). After a 4 year manhunt the creator of these videos, Peter Scully, was filmed by police whilst arrested and a brief interview was conducted by 60 minutes Australia available here.
